“I am from coal dust and honeysuckle vines, Southern Gothic ghost stories and deep, dark still waters.”
As a practicing artist for nearly 30 years I have discovered a dichotomy in myself and in my work. I try to explore each of these two sides with different mediums and techniques. With photography I seek the dark nature of the deep south. Dilapidated buildings, eccentric characters and the plight of poverty are some of the Southern Gothic themes I have explored in the past. Most other visual art pieces are gouache and India ink on paper with inspiration that can be linked to Abstract Expressionistic painters such as Wassily Kandinsky and the automatic writing style of Paul Klee. Bright vivid colors and cubist-like fragments are repeating elements The volatility of the gouache with water and the freedom involved in the gestures of ink clearly defines that happier, free-spirited side of my personality. A stark contrast to my work in photography. I need them both. As I get older I see a merging of the two.
